InterNews™ is a Macintosh® interface to the Internet world of Usenet News. The Usenet News manages text articles written by people at educational, commercial, and government institutions around the world. These articles are organized into “newsgroups” that focus discussions into specific topics across the whole spectrum of human experience: serious technical discussions, political opinion, items for sale, financial advice, personals, humor, and more. InterNews provides easy access to this Usenet world of discussion, which has traditionally been available -- through a command-line interface -- only to users with accounts on large host UNIX-based systems.
InterNews users can collect Usenet newsgroups of interest into “subscriptions,” focusing their reading to a subset of the now approximately 2,000 international newsgroups. Users can contribute to discussion groups by posting articles and sending mail directly to other participants.
InterNews can also be used to create a simple bulletin board and conferencing system at any site that has a network with a UNIX-based host. Local discussion groups can be created using UNIX news software. An Internet news feed is not required for local discussions; if the site has a news feed, the local groups will appear along with the national and international groups.
REQUIREMENTS
InterNews requires an Apple Macintosh computer running MacTCP™. The Macintosh must be on a network that has a “news host” machine available. InterNews communicates with a service called NNTP (Network News Transport Protocol) on the news host. InterNews can be configured to “talk” to any computer running NNTP.
